Afenifere Mourns the Passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, A Visionary Leader at 96

Afenifere announced the passing of its revered leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, on February 14, 2025, at 96. Known for his unwavering commitment to progressive ideals, Adebanjo was a champion of restructuring and true federalism, and he was a Nigerian rooted in equity and justice for all ethnic groups.

Chief Adebanjo, often described as an “avowed Awoist,” dedicated his life to the pursuit of a fairer Nigeria. For nearly a decade, he fondly referred to his advanced years as being in the “departure lounge,” preparing his followers for the enduring fight for a better nation.

Afenifere’s Secretary-General, Sola Ebiseni, reassured Nigerians that the movement would continue to uphold Adebanjo’s legacy, vowing to “keep the banner flying.” He also noted that further announcements would be made after consultations with Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and Adebanjo’s family.
