Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Passes Away at 81

Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most prominent political figures, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was 81.

The news was confirmed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in an official statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In honour of the late president, President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country as a symbol of collective mourning. He also revealed that he has spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the former First Lady, to express his personal condolences to the family.

As part of official arrangements, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been dispatched to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the late president back to Nigeria.

Muhammadu Buhari was a defining presence in Nigerian politics for over four decades. He served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 and earlier as military Head of State between 1984 and 1985. Known for his firm leadership style and anti-corruption stance, Buhari remained a key national figure long after his time in office.

His passing comes just over two years after he handed over leadership to President Tinubu and retired to Daura, Katsina State.
